CHAPTER NINE

H E R

“Thank you for getting all these new things for me. I’m very well set now,” I said.

“Oh sure. You’re welcome. It’s the least I can do.”

“I really mean it. Thank you for taking me into your home. I have nowhere else to go. If it weren’t for you, I might have even been dead by now. You found me, rescued me, and now you are housing me. I am forever in your debt. I realize that now, and I’m sorry I was short-tempered before.”

“Yes, of course. You were traumatized. I completely understand. Things will get better too. They always do.”

I smiled. He was so good at making me feel good about my situation.

“So, how long does it take to get to the lodge?”

“It’s not far from here. Ten, fifteen minutes, tops.”

“Great. I’m excited,” I said, smiling.

“About going out?”

I glanced out of the side window, then focused straight ahead. “Uh. Well, no. About having a chance to discover who I really am. It may come back tonight. Just a glimpse of something is all I need. Just a glimpse of the life I used to have.”

He stretched his neck, then pointed out of his window. “Here it is on the left.”

I bent down. “Wow,” I said, gazing out of the window at the huge ice structure.

On the right-hand side sat a gigantic ice building. It was illuminated with blue led lights in the roof. To the left was several wood cabins, not made of ice, but still an elegant companion to the ice.

“It’s a pretty big deal around here. They build a new theme from scratch every year. They spend days carving and carving.”

“I see. It’s beautiful. Can’t wait to go in.”

He raised one eyebrow. “Better bring your jacket.”

He pulled into the crowded parking lot.

“There’s a lot of people here.”

“Yes. Ice Band is here. That’s what we’re here for too, right?”

I drew in a breath. “No. We already talked about that. I’m just here to find out who I am.”

He frowned with one side of his mouth. “You can have a little fun.” He opened the door, letting in a cold draft. “It is allowed.”

He opened my side and I climbed from the car. I relaxed my shoulders and smiled. “So Ice Band, huh? What kind of music is that?”

“Cold, cold rock.”

I chuckled. “What? What’s that?”

“Well I can’t demonstrate here in the parking lot.”

I laughed. “Okay. We’ll enjoy the band, but first I need to ask the front desk a few questions. Do you mind?”

“Not at all. Hey, we’re here. We need to ask.”

We walked through a wooden door on the left side of the parking lot. Inside was warm and cozy.

I approached the front counter, where a thin, tall blond stood. She wore her hair slicked back in to a short, clean pony tail.

“May I help you?” She smiled.

I leaned in to the counter. “Yes. I…I have a very unusual problem. I uh…can’t remember if I’ve been staying here recently or not.”

She stared at me and then broke into a smile.
